Pictures from Oqaatsinik Pikkorissarfik
Oqaatsinik Pikkorissarfik is located on a top above the town
itself. From most of the rooms there is a view of the harbour and the town.
The building was designed by a Greenlandic architect company, Sanati, in the
mid-eighties, and it is owned by the municipality and rented by Oqaatsinik Pikkorissarfik.
The
view of the west with the "Tele Island" in the foreground and the recently
opened airport in the background. Sisimiut is more or less situated at the Arctic Circle
and theoretically has 1 day of arctic darkness, but the sun is not seen for many days.
From 21 December until March, however, things change rapidly. The sun is placed higher
and higher in the sky and from April it is light most of the 24 hours.
The view of the north. The harbour entrance is seen with the
"Præstefjeldet" in the background. Sisimiut is the northernmost ice-free
harbour and has ship connections all the year round. Therefore the supply situation in the
town is good.
A
view of the harbour area. The summer in Sisimiut can seem hectic. It is light most of the
24 hours and activities may as well take place at night as in the daytime. The area is
known for its deep fiords and it is a unique experience to sail through the fiords
encircled by mountains.
Oqaatsinik Pikkorissarfik has two large classrooms, a language
laboratory, a room for group work etc.
The centre is equipped with all kinds of modern facilities such as video conference
equipment, online computers, language laboratory, video projectors etc.
